I’ll never forget the patient I took care of in room 12 bed 1 in the high risk rooms of Labor and Delivery. She was about 21 weeks pregnant with PROM. We spent many hours talking and sharing ideas. She gave me a gift of inspiration I will always cherish in the form of a paper. This woman lost her life trying to keep her baby. The following is the greatest gift I ever received from her or any other patient I ever took care of.

GOALS FOR THE NEW YEAR

Compliment three people every day.

Watch a sunrise at least twice a year.

Be the first to say,”Hello.”

Live beneath your means.

Treat everyone like you want to be treated.

Never give up on anybody. Miracles happen!

Forget the Joneses.

Never deprive someone of hope. It may be all the person has.

Pray not for things, but for wisdom and courage.

Be tough-minded, but tenderhearted.

Be kinder than necessary.

Don’t forget: A person’s greatest emotional need is to feel appreciated.

Keep your promises.

Learn to show cheerfulness, even when you don’t feel like it.

Remember that overnight success usually takes about 15 years.

Leave everything better than when you found it.

Remember that winners do what losers don’t want to do.

When you arrive at your job in the morning, let the first thing you say brighten everyone’s day.

Don’t rain on other people’s parades.

Never waste an opportunity to say “I Love You” to someone.

There are moments in life that define who we are. The incidents and occurrences that will either make us or break us. Learn to make the best out of your life. Live each moment as if it were your last. I am so glad I met….. the patient in room 12 bed 1. My life changed forever.

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs;
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.

I gave you a gift today…..You didn’t need to unwrap it. It was right before your eyes. Today’s gift was different than any other you have every received. I gave you an hour of my time. You could have ignored me. But you came. You came to celebrate my birthday. I heard your wishes and desires. Your burdens and your sufferings. I saw you today and what you did. You wept silently and then I knew….I had to hold you in my arms. I will give you more than you will ever need. I will free you from your pain. I gave you a gift today….. I gave you comfort….I gave you peace….I gave you hope….I gave you joy. Did you not see it in the baby’s eyes? Did you not see it in the old man next to you. I came to give you a new life. I am the greatest gift of all. You cannot return me. I am always present. Just believe.

I spent about an hour this morning pulling all different kinds of weeds from a corner of my lawn. I noticed that the weeds were out of control when I took the dog out this morning. I sat on a milk crate and used a garden tool to get down to the roots of the prickly weeds. I thought to myself that the weeds were like negative thoughts and emotions. What made the weeds grow in my lawn? The conditions were right….Nice green grass, nutrients and of course weed seeds. How do negative thoughts and emotions get into our lives? We allow it to. The conditions are right….Self pity, poor self esteem, anxiety, depression, fear. The list can go on and on. This morning I made a decision to pull the weeds that were choking my lawn. Today for this moment I choose to have a positive attitude. I will not let the negativity of others creep into my life and take root within me. I will try my best to surround myself with positive people. I will read inspirational books. I will do what it takes to break free from negative thoughts and emotions. One day at a time. One hour at a time. One minute at a time.
